There are techniques like meta refresh tag, the form technique etc that may be used. Using the Meta Refresh Tag you can auto redirect visitor to main page. However, search engines can detect it automatically. Unless you have valid reasons to redirect you should not use such a technique. There has to be a reasonable delay so that the search engines approve use of auto redirection.

Another technique that is used is the JavaScript Technique. It cannot be detected automatically as many search engines mostly are unable to parse JavaScript. If you have it placed in the head section at the beginning of the page it can be very effective. Another technique that the search engines are unable to detect is the Form technique. Search engines cannot complete website forms and thus do not try to submit forms which they cannot automatically detect. Forms can thus be used for auto redirecting. These forms are useful as they can be used to put a simple URL that can be requested by browser from server. If new name value pairs are added to the current URLs. If no name value pairs exist the browser can still make a request. JavaScript may be used for submitting form right away. If you do not want visitor to see a page that has been initially accessed by them then you would have to use other methods like this technique.

When using the auto redirecting technique make sure that you do not get into any trouble with search engines. Make sure that you use auto redirection only to the extent that is considered as white hat technique by them. MetaTag with the longer delay is perfectly acceptable and can help get you good results in your SEO efforts. Auto redirects are fine and give a professional appearance to website. That is precisely what is important and can help create a good image for your company with visitors.
